What is Split URL Testing?

Split URL testing allows you to compare entirely different pages by redirecting visitors to separate URLs based on the variation they are assigned to.

Instead of modifying a single page using the Visual Editor, you create full-page variations externally and let Lyftio handle the traffic split and tracking.

How it works

In a split URL test:

  • Variation A (Control): Your original page
  • Variation B (Variant): A different URL (new page)

Visitors are randomly assigned to a variation and are automatically redirected to the corresponding page.

From a testing and analysis perspective, this works exactly like a standard A/B test—the only difference is how variations are created.

Step by step

  1. You create an experiment
  2. Define your original page (Control)
  3. Add one or more variations with alternative URLs
  4. Lyftio will automatically add an Audinece condition on your Control URL
  5. Lyftio splits incoming traffic between these URLs
  6. Goals and performance are tracked across all variations

Each visitor consistently sees the same version based on their assignment.

Creating variation pages

With split URL testing, variations are built outside of Lyftio.

You can create new pages using:

  • Your website codebase
  • A CMS (Content Management System)
  • A landing page builder
  • Any external system that serves a URL

As long as the page has a unique URL, it can be used as a variation.

Example

You want to test a new landing page design.

  • Control (A): https://example.com/landing-page
  • Variant (B): https://example.com/landing-page-v2

Instead of recreating the design in the editor, you:

  1. Build the new version in your CMS or codebase
  2. Add the new URL as a variation
  3. Launch the test

Lyftio will handle traffic distribution and track which page performs best.

When to use Split URL Testing

Split URL testing is ideal when:

  • You want to test completely different page designs
  • Changes are too large or complex for the Visual Editor
  • You already manage pages in a CMS or external system
  • You need full control over layout, structure, or backend logic

Benefits

  • Test full-page redesigns
  • No limitations from visual editing tools
  • Works with any system that can serve a URL
  • Seamless integration with existing A/B testing workflows

Things to consider

  • Ensure both pages are properly tracked and accessible
  • Keep URLs consistent and correctly configured
  • Make sure the goals work on all variation pages

Summary

Split URL testing allows you to:

  • Compare entirely different pages
  • Redirect users based on experiment variations
  • Use external tools or systems to build variations
  • Analyze performance just like a standard A/B test
